All I Want For Christmas Is Line Item Vetos [Nov. 14th, 2005|10:46 am]
A line item item veto would empower the president to veto segments of a bill as opposed to the entire thing. The lack of LIVs is why we have situations like on the security bill that just cleared the senate. Attached to the security bill is John McCain's reinforcement of our stance against torture, something the White House is wishy washy on at best. In order to reject this ammendment, Bush would have to veto the entire security bill.

With a line item veto, Bush could simply veto the anti-torture portion of the bill, and approve the rest.

Why is this a good thing? Torture is bad. Bush is bad. Why would we want to give the president more power? Because as things stand, a president can absolve himself of responsibility for frivolous or pork ammendments to bills by 'signing them for the greater good'.

With Line-Item Veto power, pork would be inexcuseable, since an executive would be able to simply veto any line he disagrees with, but still sign other portions into law. This empowers citizens because they can now hold executives accountable for any pork that gets through the system on their watch.

But we can already hold the senators and representatives who propose pork responsible, right? Unfortunatly, journalism in America is shit stew, to put it lightly. Evening news reports have 30 minutes to inform the public on important stuff, but instead they spend 10 on commercials, 10 on sports, and 6 on bullshit, leaving a heaping sum of 4 minutes to do a poor job reporting real news.

A real local news broadcast, not that i've ever seen one, would be commercial free and include a detailed synopsis of the day's events in local and state government.

(This rant has been sitting on my phone for a couple months. I forgot about it. Enjoy!)

Mj found my lj :) [Aug. 1st, 2005|01:28 pm]
Hi MJ :)))) I don't really blog, but there's this really cool app for my phone called handhelj which let's me lj on my phone, which is neat. In fact i'm using it right now. I'm on lunch. It's hot outside and i'm not really in the mood for working. I had a whole weekend to myself and accomplished nothing. John Bolton recess appointment. Don't really care as UN ambasadors, as with all ambassadors, are next to powerless. They can only do what the president tells them to do. More interestingly is the recess appointment itself. Usually reserved for emergency appointments (ambassadors dies or something) or the occasional circuit court judge, this is one of the few recess appoints enacted specifically to bypass constitutional senatorial confirmations. When the senate reconveins, the whole mess just starts over again. I think it's funny because a child with an 8th grade reading level could be a rather succesful UN ambasador. Smile, shake hands, read W.H. prepared statements, and do whatever the W.H. tells you to do. If I were John Bolton, I'd be slightly offended. Probably pays good though.

Newsweek [May. 18th, 2005|11:48 am]
Newsweek is not responsible for the deaths of the rioters in Uzbekistan. Rather, the fault lies with those in our government who feel it is appropriate to hold captive individuals who are neither prisoners of war, with rights granted them by the Geneva Convention, nor US citizens, with the right to a fair and public trial. The fault lies with those in our government who see fit to transfer these prisoners to foreign states so that they might undergo torture while our hands remain legally clear of their blood.

If my brother was being held in such a fashion, no charges against him, no communication with him, it wouldn't take the flushing of a Qoran to piss me off.

The President has the audacity to pressure the press into issuing an apology. The President has zero authority over the press. This is analogous to a child telling her mother to apologize for making her eat her brocolli. If Newsweek chooses to issue a retraction, which it has, it will do so at the discretion of it's editors because in the nation we are granted a free press. It is unacceptable for any government official to demand or even suggest an action of any press institution. No laws were broken, so the government shall have no stance on Newsweek's reporting.
